Visit Iceland Volcanoes

Because of Iceland’s location on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, there are several active volcanoes throughout the country, and you can visit them as a part of your vacation if you choose.  The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. When those plates move and shift, a volcanic eruption is often the result. In most cases, these eruptions are small, posing no danger to the surrounding inhabitants. In some cases, as with the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, the eruptions are much more notable and pose several different dangers to those in the area.

Volcanoes You May See When Here

Though there are several volcanoes throughout the country, some are located under glaciers and can only be seen when erupting.  One of the most active volcanoes in Iceland is Grímsvötn, which is one of these subglacial volcanoes.  The most deadly volcanic eruption in Iceland history was from Skaftá, and the event became known as Skaftáreldar, or Fires of Skaftá. This particular volcano is also located near the Vatnajökull glacier and is a part of a larger row of volcanic craters known as Lakagígar.  There is also the volcano Katla, which usually erupts following Eyjafjallajökull.

Using The Geothermal Power

Because these volcanoes are consistently generating massive amounts of heat, it has become possible to harvest this energy for geothermal power. There are several power plants throughout the country making use of this energy, using it to power much of the nation. In addition to volcanic activity, this same geothermal activity is also present in the form of geysers.  Several of these geysers are located throughout the country, and they are certainly a sight to see when you visit.

Making the Most of Your Visit

If you want to see these amazing natural phenomena, you certainly can.  Most people think first of hotels and resorts when visiting a new country, and Reykjavík certainly has plenty. You must remember if choosing to stay in hotels that you will be sharing your holiday with several other vacationers, and that can seriously put a damper on your relaxation time.

In an effort to boost your privacy and enjoyment on your vacation, you may want to consider finding private cottages and cabins for your visit. If you think you’ll have to give up some of the luxuries that you can get in a hotel, you’d be mistaken.  In fact, most visitors find that the privacy, room to move, and amenities available in the cabins and cottages actually provide more luxury than any hotel ever could.  In fact, you’ll get all of this without having to share it with hundreds of other people seeking the same luxury as you would in a hotel.

Making the Reservations

If you’re hoping to visit Iceland to see the volcanoes and other amazing natural phenomena, you can reserve a cabin or cottage at any time.  These are located throughout the country, giving you your choice of where you want to stay.  All you have to do is choose the area, specify the amenities and size, and you’ll receive a list of cottages that fit your needs.
